Simms G4 Pro Jacket Review

This year, Simms updated its already legendary G4 Pro Jacket to make it even stronger, lighter, and more waterproof than ever before. This is a pretty remarkable accomplishment, given the old G4’s reputation of durability. With its improved GORE-TEX Pro Shell fabric, updated waterproof YKK zippers, and loads of new features. The new G4 Pro Jacket from Simms is going to be hard to beat.

Features

Some new features of the new G4 Pro Jacket are the user friendly configuration of its nine storage pockets. Which include a large back pocket and a hidden sleeve pocket, micro adjustable pit zips, and its water resistant Dry Cuff sleeve system. This system allows the wearer to adjust the cuffs of the jacket tightly, yet comfortably around his or her wrists. Keeping water out while reaching into the river or while casting on a rainy day.

Next, the new YKK Aquaguard Vislon water resistant zippers keeps water out in any situation above the surface. That is, unless you are swimming, nothing is getting past the zippers on the G4 Pro or into its pockets. These zippers perform without the need for extra fabric flaps or gaskets, so they operate more smoothly and reliably.

The best part of the updated G4 Pro Jacket, however, is probably the fabric itself. It is constructed entirely from the new three-layer GORE-TEX Pro Shell fabric. Which is stronger and 15 percent lighter than the old Pro Shell. Gore Micro Grid Backer technology gives the G4 extra abrasion and tear resistance. While allowing the jacket to easily slide over mid layers. As far as breathability, nothing has been lost, meaning that the G4 Pro will help you dump body heat and moisture quickly during the hike out.

Why the G4 Pro Jacket?

Fly fishermen and guides here in Colorado are lucky. We enjoy some of the sunniest weather in the world. When the skies do darken, however, they tend to do so in a big way. Rain, hail, sleet, and snow can overtake clear skies and ruin a great day on the water. Without notice, sending unprepared fishermen running for the truck. The other important thing to consider is that, for us as float fishermen, we often do not have the option of running to the truck, and that means that a high quality piece of outerwear is absolutely essential.

The answer is simple. Everything on the G4 Pro Jacket is designed to allow you to stay out longer when the weather is bad but the fishing isn’t, giving you the chance to catch more fish after every one else is long gone.  Stop by Vail Valley Anglers in Edwards to try one on and see how the new Simms G4 Pro Jacket will keep you fishing through the storm.
