Vail, Colorado Ski Vacations and Fly Fishing

Finally made it to Vail, Colorado for your first ski trip?  Are your legs beginning to tire after a few good days on the slopes?  Early happy hour for the fourth day in a row?

The early spring skiing in Vail, Colorado can be terrific but some of the resorts regular visitors have come to learn that fly fishing can be an excellent way to spend a half day wading the local waters after you make some ski runs.  Better yet, take the day off from the slopes and jump in a boat for a full day fly fishing adventure on the liower Colorado River.

Do you need any experience to fly fish?

All you need is the desire to go have some fun and learn a new sport.  Our Vail Valley Anglers fly fishing shop operates year-round and schedules guided fly fishing lessons all winter.  Believe it or not, vacationers are learning to fly fish almost every day in the Colorado High Country.

The clothing you are bringing for your ski trip will be adequate to wear under the waders and foot wear is provided by the guide service.  You can pick up a fishing license just for the day you plan on going fly fishing.

How to Book Your Fly Fishing Trip

Schedule your fly fishing trip  as rest from skiing and pick a day in advance to fish.  You will get the more experienced guides the earlier you reserve a spot and the extra notice will provide them a chance to better plan your day.  Things change, especially on vacation so don’t hesitate to call the night prior or the morning of the day you want to fly fish.  In a resort we get a lot of last minute reservations and do our best to accommodate them.  Should you not be a skier, schedule a couple days of fly fishing, to enjoy several of the rivers we do fly fishing lessons on. Transportation is included as part of the fly fishing trip so is the gear and lunch on full days.

Where do you go winter fly fishing in Vail, Colorado?

Beginning with the Gore Creek which runs through downtown Vail and is open year round Central Colorado offers a multitude of excellent spring fly fishing opportunities.  The Eagle River is a mid-sized stream that flows behind our fly shop which has almost 2,000 wild trout per mile.  Full day float trips are available on the Roaring Fork River and Colorado River west of Glenwood Springs.

Skiing and fly fishing make for a great vacation combination.  Try something new, learn a new sport and most of all enjoy your visit to Vail, Colorado.

See you on the water this Spring!
